Klibanaphoroi by krstovukoje Klibanaphoroi by krstovukoje
This work is also inspired by Byzantine cavalry, but this time it is the"Klibanaphoroi"cavalry unit. They were a kind of very heavily armoured horseman. This troops were slow compared to other cavalry, but their effect on the battlefield was devastating.

Awesome representation of Vyzantine cavarly. The word "Κλιβανοφόρος" aka "Klivanophoros" means "Those that wear klivanus chest armor ".

and a link that explains a lot sadly only in Greek…

I like how the design didn't change too terribly much from the Parthian forerunners.

Cool. Style looks like a mix of west and mideast. Wasn't Byzantine the 2nd roman empire, kinda to some ?

They WERE the roman empire.

These might have been slow to accelerate, but once they had reached their maximum speed, damn ... the shock effect would have been devastating, indeed.

Amazing. Whenever I try to explain what Cataphracts were in the future, I am going to point people to this picture.

What's the difference between these guys and Kataphractoi?
Screwball1987 Featured By Owner Oct 26, 2013
It depends.

Just what, exactly, is meant by the terms 'kataphractoi' and 'klibanophoroi' (which means literally 'camp oven bearer') aren't actually all that clear, and almost certainly changed over time. The usual explaination is that 'klibanophoroi' is a later term for traditional kataphractoi, and the word 'kataphractoi' itself ends up becoming a name for *any* armoured soldier riding an unarmoured horse (as opposed to klibanophoroi riding an armoured horse). Whether or not that's actually true isn't something that can currently be answered, because the information just isn't available.

Here is a small sample of some ByZantime soldiers. A scout, a lancer, and at the right a "pronoiai" , or a heavy armored and armed infantry man[link]

As far as I know Klibanaphoroi were just a tip or a version of Kataphractoi, but more hard and heavy.

Very good quality and impressive job my friend well done!

Super-heavy cavalry such as the Klibanophorii were deployed in battles from ca 950-1071 the year of the Byzantine defeat at Mantzikert from the Seljuk Turks.

I would like to comment on the use of the double headed eagle which is anachronistic. This is a family symbol of the Paleologus dynasty which ruled the Empire after the reconquest of Costantinople from the Franks (1261 AD), subsequently it was used as a state symbol as well.

Also an interesting post concerning Byzantine Maces and relevant archaelogical finds is the following: [link]

Hvala.

Just so you know. Be experience chainmail over your face isnt the most pleasant thing to wear.
krstovukoje Featured By Owner Dec 14, 2010
Thank you for a good comment, but believe me I do not like to make unrealistic and
non-sensual works. This kind of horseman truly use to wear chain-mail over their faces, but with good and soft clothing underneath the mail it self. You know as well as I do that it was heavy, and it would make nasty skin marks.

Hahaha I know, they can also cut you as the metal tend to have sharp edges. However I liked it alot, and I believe you about them using it. I just wonder how can someone be crazy enought to do so.

I think it was an article on his web page...
Something to do with a mistranslation or some such...
Basically, the thought is, that what we know as Klibanaphori, are just retainers of Kataphractoi... like a squire to a knight...
Or at least, that is his thoughts on the matter...
